Algiers marked Africa Day 2025 with a major cultural and diplomatic event at the Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture, commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity, now the African Union.

African embassies accredited to Algeria presented cultural heritage, crafts, cuisine, traditional weaving, sculpture, jewellery, photography and historical material tracing anti-colonial struggles and Algeria’s support for African liberation movements.

The event brought together ambassadors and representatives from numerous African countries. It was held under the theme “Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations”.

The African Union of Broadcasting was represented by Karima Chelbi, Director of the Content Exchange Centre in Algeria, and Irène Gaouda, head of the Centre’s Francophone Desk.

Bakhta Selma Mansouri, Algerian Secretary of State for African Affairs, said the event was an opportunity to reaffirm that justice is a collective right and to honour African peoples’ struggles against colonisation, slavery, exploitation and discrimination.

She stressed that the reparations agenda reflects Africa’s determination to restore its history and dignity and highlighted the importance of good governance, social justice and stronger South–South cooperation.
